Your Sunday Morning Jet Noise

The Convair YB-60:

I'm not convinced that the sound isn't dubbed in, but it's probably about the best that can be done. Only one of these things ever flew.

  1. Han't heard of this one. Recall a B-36 passing over my house when I was 10 or 11. Turns out, one of the guys I later flew with had been a gunner on a SAC B-36 crew.

  2. Must have been a crazy job to hand manufacture a half dozen or so of an experimental Aircraft. A little of this a bunch of that, lets order some of these and then we just have to create that. I can really appreciate the creativity and hard work in creating a working experiment.

    1. Kind of the way things were done back then. Still, a lot of the aircraft in the numerical never made it to even test stage. There was a proposal to replace the B-47 with a turboprop (the XB-55), would would have been our own version of the Tu-95.

  3. You can't tell me there's no incest in aviation manufacturing. Eight engines, large vertical fin with no roundness? That has B-52 written all over it. What are the odds? Landing gear and cockpit were carried over from the B-36, it looks like.

There was even an early B-52 slipped into the video. That was the tandem seat version (as in the B-47), which LeMay hated. He made Boeing put the pilots side-by-side or no Air Force purchase.

I didn't have the audio on, so maybe they explained it.

  4. I'll bet it sounded a lot like an early B-52. It used the same engines, according to Wikipedia, mounted roughly the same way.

  5. LRod and Cujo, it's not as though there was much choice for engines in the early 1950s.
