Ultimate WW2 Fantasy Camp?

Except that I'd want to fly it and that isn't going to happen.
Do you remember watching Twelve O'Clock High or Memphis Bell? Have your ever imagined what it would be like to train for - and fly - your own mission in the legendary B-17 Flying Fortress "Nine 0 Nine?" The Collings Foundation will be offering a very unique two-day program in which you do just that! No doubt, this is one of the most amazing living history programs you will ever experience!
They did it a few years back with their B-24.

Too rich for my blood. But it'd be fun, no doubt.

  1. The program my father was in was a little longer than two days.

Basic Training: probably ten weeks (although he did it in Miami Beach)
Radio School: probably another six weeks (Scott Field, Belleville, IL)
Gunnery School: I'd guess two to four weeks (Tyndall Field, Panama City—Ma Deuces!, Robert Stack instructor)
Crew Training: I'd guess a month or more (Pyote, TX)

Then of course, he got to put all that training (and maybe more) to good use during 35 combat missions from his group's base in England (Glatton, near Peterborough). If he were alive today, he might pop for a ride in one, but he wouldn't have any use in simulating another mission—especially if it involved electrically heated flight suits, oxygen, and up in the Flight Levels.

    He definitely had the T-shirt.

  2. I have wanted to fire 'Ma Deuce' since I first saw one on TV as a little kid. It would be such a gas, but Not with blanks, I got to see those big holes appear too.

    1. The blanks are fired from the airplane. The participants get to fire 10 live rounds on a range. They can buy more if they want. At probably $10/pop, it'll get really expensive.

  3. I believe the EAA has a program that gives you a couple of days' ground school on their B-17 and then a few minutes of stick time, including an engine-out.

  4. Interesting. I'd be tempted, if any pilot positions were open. But they're not.
