A Hard Slog Down the Runway

In Bodaybo, Russia.

  1. I wonder what the takeoff weight of that one was after takeoff, with all that mud on the fuselage. CG, too, for that matter.

There are videos floating around of P-38s in the Aleutians during WWII that are very much like this.

  2. If I was on board, looking out the window at that display, I'd be spraying mud into my pants at that rate, too.

  3. Gotta wonder what kind of strain that put on those long, skinny mains. I know those Antonovs are built like tanks, but there's a breaking point somewhere. The Dash-8/Q-400 series of airliners have a similar high wing/long gear configuration and have had a pile of gear failures. Had this video featured one of those, the plane would be making mud angels instead of altitude.

    1. It was probably an An-24 and those airplanes were built for rough/unimproved airstrips.
