Chrysler Could Make Shit
Two datapoints: It took Bofors 450 man-hours to make each gun. Chrysler got that down to ten man-hours. The extractor of a Bofors-made gun was good for 1,500 rounds. Chrysler re-engineered it and tripled that life-span.

ReplyDeleteChrysler can still make shit. Look at that new 3.6L Pentastar engine, for example -- not only does it make more torque and horsepower than any other normally aspirated engine of its displacement, but it's also cheaper to manufacture than its competitors due to some very savvy engineering work to simplify the castings and reduce the number of bolt-on parts. Unfortunately, their management refuses to stand behind Chrysler's product and fix the design flaws that show up with time (such as the 2005-2006 Wrangler OPDA's lack of upper bushing lubrication, or the fuel tank rollover valve problems of most of their modern vehicles, or ...), thus their modern nickname amongst mechanics: Chiseler Corporation.

ReplyDeleteThey didn't do such a bad job with the M4 Sherman, either. Except for the nickname it earned—Ronson, because it lit every time it was struck.
Nevertheless, with a production ratio of about 50,000:1,600 over the most produced German tank, it personified Lenin's dictum, "quantity has a quality all its own."

Both 450 and 10 man-hours are inevitably wrong for the production.
ReplyDeleteThat might be assembly, but there's no chance that this involves the total production.
Chrysler made and makes the best engineered and best built cars before the bean counters do a Budweiser on them and water them down.

The 450 hours was for all the hand fitting and filing. The 10 hours was for precision interchangeable parts. If you are willing to tool up and gage up, you can work wonders.
