The Last Doughboy From the Great War Has Died

Frank Buckles was 110 years old.

He lied about his age to join the Army in 1917.

  1. My maternal grandfather, my namesake, also lied to get into the service. Lotsa peer pressure for it, back then.

He got in a 14½ and in the trenches at 15. (Big for his age.) Family legend says he was the youngest American soldier, but I don't believe that. The age was right, though, unless he lied about his age for the rest of his life, too.

He died in '67 from a combination of cigars, red meat and butter.

  2. A long time ago, I had some dealings with a guy who said that he had entered the Marines in 1944 just after his 14th birthday.
