My maternal grandfather, my namesake, also lied to get into the service. Lotsa peer pressure for it, back then.
ReplyDeleteHe got in a 14½ and in the trenches at 15. (Big for his age.) Family legend says he was the youngest American soldier, but I don't believe that. The age was right, though, unless he lied about his age for the rest of his life, too.
He died in '67 from a combination of cigars, red meat and butter.
A long time ago, I had some dealings with a guy who said that he had entered the Marines in 1944 just after his 14th birthday.
