I picked one up from eBay for less than $30; a school system was selling their stock of them. My first pass at writing with one is here.
The one real drawback is that it only displays nine lines of text. The positives are that it runs for a long time on three AA batteries and it is not internet-compatible. So it greatly reduces the temptation to open a browser or e-mail program while writing. In that regard, it is almost like using a typewriter, but without having to scan the output and then correct all of the scanning errors.
I never plan out what I intend to write. I just start on it and the story goes wherever it goes.
