Honor Your Local Traitor Day

In the South, they celebrated Robert E. Lee Day on the same day this year that the rest of the country is honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

So while the rest of us honor a man who, in the 20th Century, was murdered in the struggle for civil rights and equality, the Southerners honor a man who fought a war to preserve slavery. It is probably a safe bet that the men who dreamed up Robert E. Lee Day opposed everything that Dr. King stood for. It's probably a safe bet that not a few of them have white pointy conehead hats in the back of their closets.

  1. Oh, but it's all about LOVE (how much they LOVE the semi-literate white male...)

    How fucking depressing.

  2. No no no, Suz, it's all about HERITAGE! A heritage of owning people of color as property, that is.

  4. No, no, it's all about States' Rights. Especially the right of States to allow their upper classes to own human beings as fucking property.

Honestly, I didn't even know this "holiday" existed. I guess this is one more reason to question Florida's Southern bona fides.

  5. I repeat my sentiments as expressed in your earlier entry Cult of General Bobby Lee

Seems to me there's a word for someone who takes up arms against the country whose largesse has funded their education and commission, and whose constitution they've sworn to defend.

What is it? Um, traitor comes to mind. I've never understood the reverence in which Bobby is held. "…can't fight against my home state?" WTF! Your allegiance is to your country!

At least Arnold won a battle or two before he turned. What'd Bobby do? Commandant of the USMA is about it. That doesn't even deserve a statue, in my estimation. It certainly doesn't deserve canonization.
