If Cats Ran the Olympics

Synchronized Sleeping would be an event.


I feed them a good quality dry food. I use Friskies "Feline Favorites" as their treats. I have to keep the open bag of the Friskies in a cabinet, as the cats have figured out how to knock the clip off.

I had bought a second bag, because I had a coupon that was nearing its expiration date. The other morning I woke up to the sound of one of them beating the hell out of a paper bag. Sure enough, they were trying to tear open the new bag. (It is a good thing that I keep their claws clipped.) Now that bag is in the cabinet, as well.

    My sweeties are enjoying the Fall influx of mice into the basement. There have been five mousecapades this weekend. We only rescued four.

    I think the cats don't really want to kill the mice; they just like having their own self-propelled toys.

    I have watched completely feral cats play with mice and chipmunks before they kill them. There has to be a reason for that behavior. So I would guess that the sheer terror experienced by the prey must do something to make them more delectable to the cats.

    Maybe the lactic acid released into the muscles tenderizes the meat? The prey, in essence, cooks itself for the cats?

    I think it's just play. My cats were taken from their mother at 3 weeks, so they don't know a lot of things average cats know. They don't even meow right. One of them squeaks, and the other does a howl you'd expect to hear from a dark alley. And she only started that after she was in heat the first time.

    When they catch a mouse, they bring it upstairs to show us. Showing us is important to them, even when they know we'll take the mouse away, if we can.

    Then, they drop the mouse and pretend to ignore it. When it gets far enough away, they'll chase it again. This can go on for a long time. The only time they kill a mouse is by accident, I'm convinced.

    Anytime we have a bag of dry food, we have to keep it locked away or the same thing will happen at our house. On the occasions when I've put a bag down and forgotten it, it's cracked open within half an hour or so.

    They are forever starving. Not hungry - starving.
