Last month was the 50th anniversary of the Luna-3 space probe, the first one to photograph the far side of the Moon. Luna 3 was apparently the first space probe to photograph another celestial body.
But it has been pretty much forgotten.
If you read the history of US space probes, it was not until 1964, after six attempts, before Ranger 7 successfully took photographs of the Moon.
