On This Fourth of July

It is not a holiday for the Marines: They are moving into Helmand Province in Afghanistan. They are trying to displace the Taliban. Two soldiers were killed elsewhere in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Vice President Biden told the Iraqis that if they want to restart their sectarian/civil war from 2006, this time, the US is going to let them kill each other and will provide no more economic or development assistance.

I had to look for this story; the headlines are about the Wasilla Wacko, North Korea shooting off more "missile tests" and, of course, a recently dead and long-over-the-hill pop star.

Other stories one might have to scroll down to see an example of what happens when we talk to other nations rather than just hector them.

  1. Well, I'm with VP Biden on this one. Those people have been fighting and killing each other for over a thousand years. Now that Saddam is no longer there to keep a lid on this long-running battle, it will keep on going.

So, after the referees (our soldiers) leave and they want to pick up the fight where they left off, I really don't care as long as our sons and daughters are not over there getting killed.

  2. Happy Fourth of July, Comrade EBM! And thank you for reminding us of the courageous service of our fellow citizens in the military.
