Memorial Day

This is what I wrote last year.

It bothers me that Memorial Day has been devalued into just another damn floating holiday so that people can have a three day weekend. It has for decades. Whoever thought up the phrase "Memorial Day Sale" blasted and blackened their soul when they did so.

About 25,000 men died in the Revolutionary Army to free this nation. Over a million have died in wars since and tens of millions of men and women have served in our armed forces. It is they who should be honored tomorrow. They should be honored with a proper day of remembrance and reflection, not with a cruddy three-day weekend.

But I'm spitting into the wind on this.

  1. I agree completely. It certainly couldn't hurt Americans to have a *secular* holiday to remember those who've died in our wars, who they were, & why we fought, & it might even do us some good.
