Hundreds of poorly-regulated ash pits holding billions of tons of coal ash, with over a hundred million tons being added each year.
Note that TVA refused to improve its ash storage at its Kingston plant because it would have cost $25 million. But now, they may have to pay ten times as much to clean up the spill, not to mention compensating the residents nearby for contaminating the water supply for the area.
EPA has been "studying" this issue since 1980. It is high time that they stop with the studying and start with the regulating.
