Guess Which Party He Belongs To

This governor of a state is, like many other governors, faced with a state budget deficit.

He proposes to:
  • Raise fees for driver's licenses and vehicle registration.
  • Raise licensing fees for professionals who are licensed by the state.
  • Cut medicaid spending.
  • Cut educational spending.
  • Close state facilities.
  • Lay off some state workers.
  • Cut aid to municipalities.
  • Raise taxes on gasoline
  • Raise taxes on cable TV
  • Raise the fines for motor vehicle violations.
What he does not propose to do:
  • Tax rich people.
In that his proposals would seem to land most heavily on the working poor and the middle class, you'd think that he might be one of those sterling elected officials from the Party of Hoover.

And you would be wrong.

  1. The problem is that you keep looking at it as an "us vs. them/dem vs. repub" issue.

A politician is a politician is a politician. Period.

No matter how good their intentions were/are going in to office, they all end up corrupted, miserable thieving bastards who have no common sense and are only out for their own personal power/vanity/glory.

The letter after the name is merely the tool they use to keep the rest of us at odds, the better to increase their own fief.

  2. I would have thought that it would be really hard to be more cynical than I am, but damn!

    I bow to you.

  3. Whoa. That is cynical, but true. As long as the system is awash in money, we're not really going to see changes to the tax laws.

  4. This is why I believe passionately in term limits. We have them on the Presidency, ensuring that whomever gets elected only has eight years to fuck things up.**

Why can't we do the same to our Senators and Representatives? You have two goes -- once your eight or 12 years are up, you should fuck off.

Of course, I also think all lobbyists should be tarred, feathered and run out of the halls of power on a rail -- and under pain of death should they return.

(**This was one of my biggest problems with HRC as a candidate fro President. I'm not in to the idea of political dynasties. We had basically three Bush terms, separated by eight years of Clinton.)
