We Come in Peace, Earthlings

The sounds of Saturn, from NASA.

Some of them, especially the one titled "Eerie Sounds of Saturn's Radio Emissions," sound like they came right out of a 1950s space opera.

  1. Um, don't we have more important things to be dumping our tax dollars into than this sort of thing? Yes, my tax dollars are involved, too.

I'm all for exploration and discovery, but right now, you know, the only world we can actually live on is kind of going down the crapper.

    Sigh.....

  2. fjb, I disagree for a few reasons.

First, the Cassini spacecraft was launched several years ago. The expense now is in monitoring and analyzing the data, which is minimal in the scheme of things.

Second, no matter what present time you pick, there always are problems. Whether now or in the 1960s or the 1600s, there are always problems at home. We need to keep an eye on the future and work towards it as the same time we work on the issues effecting the present day.

  3. It doesn't look like any of the G8, or any other government for that matter, are too interested in working on any of the pressing issues of the present day right here at home, other than to make the rich richer.

My dream since childhood has been to look down on the earth from space. That would be as close to my idea of heaven as I'd ever get. At the same time, I wonder if I were to suddenly have the money to book my flight, would I? Or would I use it to provide people like me, who have to drive crappy old vehicles puking emissions into the atmosphere, with something more eco friendly? Yes, this is one of the weird and wonderful things I think about.:-)
