The Boob Tube

I probably don't watch a heck of a lot of television, but there are some shows I like:

Comedy Central: The Daily Show, the Colbert Report

SciFi Channel: Painkiller Jane, Eureka, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate Atlantis

TNT: The Closer

USA: Burn Notice

You may have noticed that there are no shows listed from the four networks.

You may also have noticed that there are no lawyer shows listed. That is deliberate, as most of them suck. They may be funny or poignant, but I can't get past the point that nearly every lawyer on those shows routinely does crap that would, in real life, either get them sued for malpractice or hauled in front of the local disciplinary board on a disbarment proceeding.

I'd have not listed Stargate SG-1, if it was still on. When they brought the Aur'i (I don't know how they spell it and I'm not going to go look it up) in as the latest set of villains, the show jumped the shark. And how many times can they whack Daniel Jackson and bring him back to life? Finally, having Claudia Black and Ben Browder on the same team was just weird, since they also had co-starred in Farscape. (At least Black's character in SG-1 was different from the one she played in Farscape, while Browder's character was "John Creighton Joins SG-1".)

If I had to recommend one of the drama shows as one you should see, I think it would be Burn Notice. It airs on Thursdays at 10 Eastern Time, TiVo/tape it and see for yourself.

  1. My wife makes the same complaint about medical shows. ER docs (and surgeons) don't do all of things depicted in a typical episode.

I use the Star Trek rule: Unless you've got the budget for an entire crew, the captain gets to beam down to every planet.

We still watch House and Gray's Anatomy.

  2. If I had House as a doctor, I'd have to be really sick in order not to try and strangle him with a power cord from the heart rate monitor.

Star Trek was stupid in that regard, the captain should be the last one who beams into a hazardous situation.

    But hey, it's fiction.
