Circus Fire, 75 Years Ago

The Hartford Circus Fire occurred 75 years ago today. The circus was held under a 9,000-seat "big-top" canvas tent, which had been waterproofed with gasoline-thinned paraffin. Over 168 people were killed, over 700 injured.

The cause of the fire has never been fully determined.

A circus fire in Brazil in 1961 killed over 500 people. The tent there had been waterproofed in a similar manner.
