The Marines entered into the Battle of Belleau Wood on June 6, 1918.

It's a date that has become overshadowed by D-Day and the Battle of Midway. But it's a battle that ranks very high in the Marine canon. Reportedly, their cherished nickname of "Devil Dogs" came from the Germans referring to them as "hell hounds". So did the motivational cry of "C'mon you sons-of-bitches, do you want to live forever?" Nearly 2,000 Marines died there.

The French government awarded the Marine 4th Brigade the Croix de guerre.
