The Martian, the Movie
I got home a little while ago from watching the movie. Given that the mass-market paperback is 448 pages long, they had to leave some stuff out. And there are a couple of "Hollywoodish" touches that are, well, stupid and for which somebody should be smacked around.
But as for a film-to-movie adaptation, I think that only the 1973 Day of the Jackal hewed closer to the book. They did an excellent job of capturing the spirit of the book's portrayal of astronaut Mark Watney.
My recommendation: Get thee to a theater near you. See this one.
For if you're interested in space and space exploration and you don't see this movie, there is something seriously wrong with you.

COMMENT MODERATION IS IN EFFECT UFN. This means that if you are an insulting dick, nobody will ever see it.
I'm afraid that will have to wait. Far as I'm concerned, the exhibition sector of the movie industry should be making buggy whips. Big-screen TV; fully adjustable sound; comfy seat; no loudmouths; feet don't stick to the floor; clean bathroom and a pause button; snacks at grocery store prices; liquor at liquor store prices; who needs it?
ReplyDeleteThat picture will be just as good in a couple of months...;-)
I don't have a big-screen TV. So yes, I'll go to a theater. This one was nearly full and everybody was paying attention to the movie. I didn't see one phone light up and nobody was talking.
