Range Report; 6906 Edition

Which I bought a couple of weeks back.

It shoots decently enough.

In checking with the S&W gurus, it seemed that a couple of parts were both parts that sometimes needed to be replaced and which were drifting towards unobtainium status-- particularly a gizzie called a "trigger play spring" and its associated rivet. Got a couple of them.

I also ordered a couple of recoil springs. When I field-stripped the gun to take the old one out, it was significantly shorter. Somebody had clipped several coils from it. That's OK if you're firing low-power target rounds, but I'm not. So, of course, I had to go to the range to ensure that the standard recoil spring functioned. It did, nary a bobble.

About half of those shots were double-action. The DA trigger pull on a 3rd generation SA/DA
Smith is pretty damn long. But it's smooth and it shoots OK.

It'll do.

  1. Yeah - the adjustment from first round DA to second round SA is hard. You end up really wanting to shift your grip - it's hard to find a consistent handshake with both. My doctrine is to avoid DA at all costs - I'd rather take the time to cock the hammer and get accurate second and third shots downrange than rely on an accurate DA first round and then find myself trying to re-grip...

  2. I am curious as to what you're feeding it. I think people who dismiss the nine as ineffective haven't looked at the available modern ammunition. Even back in the 80s when my 9mm was a P38, Silvertips made it potent...

  3. I feed it el-crapo range stuff for practice (but not the steel-cased stuff). Otherwise, Hornady Critical Defense 115gr loads.
