Why Black Parents Have "The Talk" With Their Children

Because you might be a reporter and columnist for the New York Times and your son might be a junior at Yale, but to the cops, he's just another thug until proven otherwise.
This is the scenario I have always dreaded: my son at the wrong end of a gun barrel, face down on the concrete.

  1. I once had several officers pointing guns at me. Ordered out of the car, walk backwards, cuffed, sat in that weird hard plastic backseat, denied having a gun, then watched them order my nonexistent passenger out (I tried to say there wasn't one but they didn't want to hear anything from me yet).
The reason was very similar to this student's stop. But my father wasn't a journalist, and I am not black.
