That Had to Hurt Some

7 comments:

  1. I developed a habit, in the tricycle gear trainers I flew, of applying braking while I held the nose up on rollout. I had to modulate the braking and elevator to maximize deceleration and ensure the nose came down gently. It was tricky and required good reflexes.

Grass strips and taildraggers scare me, though.

Looks like this one decelerated too fast, and perhaps slid forward against the brake pedals.

It took me a long time to realize it, but you use some of your weight in operating brake pedals, at least in cars. You'll notice your car seems to stop better from going forward, than from going in reverse.

    1. I suspect that the pilot was trying to show off a little by staying up on the mains as long as he could.

Problem with a taildragger, of course, is that the center of gravity is sometimes pretty close to the mains and showing off like that can have exactly that result, especially if one of the main wheels hits a slight hole in the turf.

The clown touched down in a 3-point configuration, he should have stayed there.

    2. Yes indeed. He realized too late how quickly elevator authority decayed as he slowed down and was unable to hold the tail down applying the brakes.

On the plus side, I understand he won the short field landing contest. Trophy and everything.
