An American Car Company. Really.

The latest plan for the troubled automaker, which is expected to file for bankruptcy by Monday, calls for the Treasury Department to receive about 70 percent of a restructured G.M.
Care to bet as to which models of cars and trucks the Feds will be buying for fleet purchases?

  1. Comrade Misfit, they'll be purchasing Chryslers (similarly majority owned by the federal government), because GM doesn't currently make any large rear-wheel-drive cars suitable for police cruiser / fleet use, while the new Chrysler big cars were designed for that purpose (amongst other things).

Hopefully like Renault the company will be able to transition to private ownership again after all this depression shit is over. Note that GM's sales are down about the same amount as Toyota's, so it's not as if people are choosing Toyotas rather than GM's. It's this damned world-wide depression thingy, which wouldn't be made better by allowing GM to collapse (just as the Japanese government sure as hell isn't going to let Toyota collapse, in fact the Japanese government is already paying Toyota to *not* make cars to deal with the glut of production capacity at Toyota's Japanese factories).
