I Miss the Cold War

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday reportedly authorized his country's armed forces to respond to a deadly attack in Kashmir last week in whatever way they see fit, as tensions with neighboring Pakistan remain high.

Hours later, Pakistan's information minister said that Islamabad had "credible intelligence" that India was planning an imminent military strike within the next 24-36 hours.

"Pakistan has credible intelligence that India intends to launch a military strike within the next 24 to 36 hours using the Pahalgam incident as a false pretext," Attaullah Tarar wrote on social media platform X.

"Any act of aggression will be met with a decisive response. India will be fully responsible for any serious consequences in the region!" he added
.

Shit like this can spiral out of control, as the shooting of an Austrian royal and his wife demonstrated. Maybe there will be some minor-ish shooting, but it's possible that the world will see its first nuclear exchange, which is a pretty antiseptic way of describing blowing a number of cities and millions of people into oblivion.

Add to that the possibility of a nuclear fall, things could be kind of worse.

We may up regretting the end of the Cold War.

  1. That's an old article and India is way ahead of Pakistan in ballistics due to their space program.

This is a list of all the foreign satellites launched by India. India has launched 431 satellites for 34 countries as of 30 July 2023.[1] As of 2019, the Indian Space Research Organisation, India's government space agency, is the only launch-capable agency in India, and launches all research and commercial projects.

  2. For better or (much) worse, Modi represents political sovereignty in India, and sovereigns are not allowed to delegate anything to anyone in such sweeping terms as this. Telling the Army, take care of this however you like, does only one thing, which is to prepare for Modi to shirk responsibility if it all goes sideways. But he *cannot* shirk responsibility; there is nowhere else for it to go, without exploding the entire system.
