If you're one of the Covidiots who believe that COVID-19 is "just the flu",
that the 2020 election was stolen, or
especially if you supported the 1/6/21 insurrection,
leave now.

Trump: "Pretend I'm On the Ballot."
Democrats: "OK!!"
A year or so ago, the pundits were saying that it was highly unlikely that the Democrats could flip the Senate and even if they did so, it would be by one or two seats.
Four seats and it's possible that two more may be added. Between that and the House, where the Democrats will have 225 seats and there are almost sixty seats left to be decided. Trump's rubber-stamp Congress will be over. It may be gone, now, as those Republicans who were fired by their constituents will have no reason to keep bowing to him.
The Democrats also flipped the governorships in some red states, including Texas and Georgia. In both states, Democrats took the office of attorney general.
A few thoughts.
Besides the economy, the Republicans' heavy reliance on hate-based politicking backfired. Trump's gerrymandering not only backfired, it may have driven voters to the polls in those districts. Fetterman was probably counting on having a lot of influence if the Democrats got to 51 seats. Now, he'll be little more than an annoyance.
And anyone who is now babbling about how the Democrats stole the election should be pitied, for they clearly need some professional help.

COMMENT MODERATION IS IN EFFECT UFN. This means that if you are an insulting dick, nobody will ever see it.
To me, this vote represents a return to normalcy and respect for others. Now the misogynists, 'Christian' nationalists, white supremacists, nazis, etc. will disappear back into the bushes (ala Homer Simpson) to wait for the next time they'll be able to become 'relevant'. But we should remember the congressional people who supported them and never elect them again.
ReplyDeleteMy hope is that the Democrats will first and foremost work to improve the daily lives of ALL citizens and THEN work toward repealing and repairing the damage to the country this administration caused.

I see no reason why they can’t do both at the same time.
DeleteFrom the most recent Economist:
ReplyDeleteThat reflects the broader priorities of Latino and Asian-American voters. They spend more time working than the average American. Latinos are more than twice as likely as whites to start a business; Asian-Americans spend more time in school. “Even if you’re not yourself an immigrant, but you’re descended from them, you’re in this country to work hard and get ahead, and that means that economic considerations come ahead of so much else,” says Carlos Odio, a researcher who specialises in surveying Latinos. As Ruben Gallego, a Democratic senator, put it last year, “every Latino man wants a big-ass truck”, often described affectionately as la troquita.
All this set up Latino and Asian-American voters as the perfect swing group in 2024, when prices were the dominant issue. Latinos were particularly exposed to the spike in petrol prices in 2022 owing to their higher-than-average spending on cars, trucks and fuel. Later, in 2023 and 2024, the effect of inflation shifted to housing costs; that disproportionately affected Asian-Americans, who spend more on housing than other groups.
These are the swing voters these days. The Iran war made this wave as big as it was. Absent that, the pundits would've been in the ballpark. This is going to be an interesting post mortem in the forecasting verse.

Flying Fickle Finger Of Fate
At 80 years (young), I am so delighted to see a new diverse (you can say that word again) group of selectees with a bent to focusing on people’s needs boot the bootlickers. It's a sorely-needed generational change and they'll be able to focus on well more than one thing at a time.
ReplyDeleteAlso: Mike Johnson demoted. And Senator Max Miller gets the drubbing he most assuredly deserves.
I wonder how much the average age in the senate has dropped?

If he makes it to the end of his term the felon will be a lame duck...
ReplyDeleteThis should be good.
He's already pretty lame when his own VP shivs him in the back and he's either too stupid to realize it or too impotent to counterattack.
DeleteThe problem with having BJ Vance taking over is that he is the Manchurian Candidate set up by Peter Theil.
