On last week's Covert Affairs, one of the good guys had a rifle that I've never seen on a TV show: A Mosin-Nagant with an ATI stock and screwed-on turn-down bolt handle:
I'm not big on bubbifying old military rifles, but given the point that you can buy them for $100 or less, another hundred bucks or so buys the mounts, bolt mod and the stock (and $50 for a scope), for $250, you've got a rifle that's ready to go. You can probably do even better at a pawn shop, which probably makes it a decent rifle for a prop guy to buy for a cable TV show on a budget.

I wouldn't call that Bubbafied. They took the time to knock the front sight and bayonet lug off the thing. It's actually a pretty nice job from what I can tell in the little picture.
ReplyDeleteIn semi-related news, have you seen the History Channel reality series Top Shot? They used both the SVT-40 and Mosin Nagant several times during the competition. Some badass shooting in that show.
ReplyDeleteJustin, I think the bolt looks ugly. I gather it is too costly to take a Mosin bolt body and weld on a proper turned-down handle.
ReplyDeleteWP, no, I haven't. I avoid "reality" shows.
Welding on a bolt handle is tricky as it may need machine work to clean up and it may possibly warp.
ReplyDeleteI'd call the result interesting. I'd worry the bolt some but if the result shot as well or better why not? People did it with Mauser actions all the time. Besides assuming the result is a good shooting high power rifle at a reasonable price its all good.
Also like all other mods applied to relics, everyone has the option to not do that or have one of each.
Except in MA, you have to wait till next month to get the second one.
I pass on reality shows, there is often little of it there.
Eck!
